Can God Fly?

by Kelly Dixon

Reading: Romans 12:5-7

“God can fly can’t He, Mom?” This question arose from my three year old on our way in to school one morning this week. “Yes, God can fly. He can do anything,” my encouraging response came with apprehension knowing that the questions usually get harder. Yet, to my surprise the next response wasn’t a question at all but an observation. “I know this because Jesus flew up into heaven,” she exclaimed excitedly. Then the observatory mind sparked the return of inquiry, “Mom, why didn’t Jesus wear shoes when He went to heaven? Do we not need shoes in heaven?” As my mind began wondering what would be the best response, once again my five year old came to the rescue. “No, sister, Jesus didn’t need shoes because He was flying not walking.” Hmm, I thought, good answer. Thank God I didn’t have to come up with one. Yet, the detail of Jesus’ ascension being pictured without shoes had never been brought to my attention before. My mind began to think, “If I paid more attention to detail, I wonder how much more I could glorify God.”

This past weekend, before our latest Ladies for Jesus retreat, I had the opportunity to observe detail in action. This was the first retreat in which I was there during the time that our decorating team, along with other teams, was hard at work doing what they do so well. On many occasions I caught myself looking around taking in all the aspects of a transformation from a rather dull room into an amazing work of art that brought pure enjoyment to the attendees as they walked into the room. My observations saw the details that were taken very seriously. Detail work on each letter of the sign being just right. Each butterfly in the netting around the sign was placed in just the right spot. Each table cloth, flower, candle, etc. was placed just right. In the kitchen, the ladies worked on the food making sure it was not only plentiful, but presented in a wonderful fashion. Sound check was underway to make sure the piano’s volume didn’t out weight the soloist and vice versa. All this was being done to make sure this retreat would bring others closer to Christ and ultimately glorify our King - all done so we can bear much fruit.

Do you do your work for the Lord with great detail? Do you do your best at putting in action the gifts you have received from the Holy Spirit? I feel the need for detail within my own preparation for speaking at the retreats. This attention to detail I feel is sparked by the underlying urgency to make sure every word that I speak and message I share is what the Holy Spirit wants shared. And through this feeling, I know how the other members of Ladies for Jesus’ Leadership Team feel about making sure their part is done just right. It is something we draw from our heavenly Father who also is very meticulous in how He does His own work. We must draw strength from the One who gave us the gifts to do what we do for Him. Draw wisdom to do even the finest detail just right. Through doing this, we will be able to bear much fruit and ultimately fly up to heaven with our Savior, Jesus Christ. And I am certain it will be without shoes!!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your fruit is what I want to bear to this world. Help me to invest my time in the details of putting the gifts the Spirit has given me into action. I want to do my best for You Lord so that You may receive all the glory. Amen.
