“Oh NO. It's gone!” I exclaimed as I looked down at my ring finger and saw prongs that no longer supported their jewel. My oldest daughter quickly ran into the bathroom. “What's wrong Mommy? What's gone?” She asked in her sweet very concerned voice. “My diamond – it's gone.” She looked at me not knowing what to say and then expressed, “Okay, Mommy I would help you look for it, but I just came in here for a minute. I really have something I need to do.” As my heart was taking in the reality, I told her, “That's fine, sweetheart, just go back to whatever you were doing.” I was wanting a clear floor anyway. I had a diamond to find. Why didn't I sweep and mop the floor yesterday? It sure would have made the job easier!! After a diligent search of the bathroom, retracing of steps, and searching the car, my heart began to sink even more. Then the phone rang and it was my husband. I told him the news and after assisting with possible places to look he finally said, “Kelly, it's only a ring.” I hung up the phone and thought, you know he is right, but my heart didn't want to accept it.
I began to get angry at myself. It's only a ring?!! Didn't he hear me? I had lost the solitaire diamond out of my engagement ring that he had given me. The diamond that was his grandmother's diamond. This diamond had more than dollar value. It had sentimental value that was priceless!! His reaction of “letting me off the hook,” was making my heart ache more and I continued the search for the diamond. Finally, after about an hour of searching, I realized that there was no hope left. It was gone and I needed to accept it.
When my husband got home from work and after a discussion about the diamond, he realized how upset I was about loosing it. He decided he would go out and look in the car for me one more time and as he walked out the door, I tucked my head in my sweater and prayed, “Lord, if this diamond is to be found, please let us find it. If not, give me strength to accept it.” My prayer was a simple prayer, but it was all I knew to say. I had lost all hope and I needed to borrow some from God. Borrow some hope for a miracle that the little jewel would be found and some strength for accepting reality if it was not found.
I had never thought about it that way, never thought about being bankrupt on hope and needing to borrow some from God. But then it hit me, that is where God can use us the most. When we are bankrupt and need a Savior. A Savior to hold us close, and allow us to borrow His strength, His courage, His hope. And I began to realize that this little worldly loss was turning into an eternal lesson. A lesson I needed in my life because many times I have been traveling on empty trying my best to grasp for hope in the world. When in reality God wanted me to turn to Him and borrow it from the One who has true hope. God wants us to realize at every moment to come to Him. Jesus tells us in the Scriptures, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29)
Have you been traveling on empty? Are you bankrupt in strength, courage and hope? Then ask the Father to teach you how to borrow from Him. I am convinced that it is only through His strength that we will have courage to face the next moment and have hope for the future. And by the way, in regards to my diamond; little did I know my husband was saying the same prayer as he walked out the door. Just when he was about to give up looking, he was led to go back to the car and look one more time. As he pulled up the arm rest, his flashlight hit the diamond, it sparkled for him to see and he grabbed it. He came inside placed it in a baggy and handed it to me. We both began to rejoice, thanking God for this little miracle in our lives. And as we rejoiced, I couldn't help but think; this must be a taste of what the angels feel like when they rejoice over one sinner being saved. For we, God's priceless possessions, are at that point restored to our Father, our rightful Owner, when we accept His salvation.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the little miracles in my life. The miracles that give me a glimpse into eternity. Help me to learn how I can borrow from You and never be bankrupt again. Lord, You are my help and my protection. My soul clings to You. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
